The Pilates ring, sometimes called a Magic Circle or Power Ring, is a piece of equipment that is about the size of a large steering wheel.    It is one of the original tools that Joseph Pilates created to help channel  feedback from your body.   The ring enhances the ability to feel the connections to your center.  The Pilates ring should provide moderate resistance while providing feedback about the muscles engaged during a movement.  Consider the ring an eager assistant, finding ways to help the core become more efficient on the job, thus achieving greater results.
The ring provides resistance that helps to tone muscles in a simple, balanced and efficient workout and can be used to work the muscles of the arms and upper body by compressing it between both hands.   Its also used to strengthen the leg muscles by compressing the ring between ankles or thighs. When used properly, you will find the ring a great tool for deepening your work.  The ring is secondary to your powerhouse and is never the main point of any exercise in which it is used.  If you find yourself creating tension outside the powerhouse, like tension in your neck, or find yourself more aware of the ring than the center of your body, you are probably devoting too much of your strength to the ring and will miss out on some of the benefits of the exercise being taught.

The Pilates Ring, Magic Circle or Power Ring, is usually made of flexible metal or rubber, about thirteen inches in diameter, with small pads on either side.  It provides gentle to moderate resistance in an exercise.  It also gives the body feedback about which muscles are being used.  The magic circle is not intended to provide a big resistance challenge.
